How to Get to the San Blas Islands from Panama City (2026 Guide)

The most popular route. You'll head out on the Pan-American Highway to El Llano, where you'll take a detour toward the Caribbean coast. The last stretch is unpaved — a 4x4 is essential. By seaplane from Albrook Airport

For those who prefer comfort, seaplanes depart from Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (Albrook) in Panama City. The flight takes 25 to 40 minutes. More expensive, but the aerial view of the archipelago is worth the price.

What you need to know before you go

• Bring cash in dollars — there are no ATMs on the islands.
• Use biodegradable sunscreen — reefs are fragile ecosystems.
• The best time to visit is December to April (dry season).
• Consider comarca taxes: USD 7 for Panamanians and USD 22 for foreign tourists — paid in cash on-site.
